The loop of the Ramparts

Get an eyeful

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, enjoy your holiday and walk on the ramparts of Saint-Malo.

Walking on the ramparts is undoubtedly one of the most sought after activities. Take a walk and enjoy the most popular vistas of the city of Saint-Malo and its surroundings. A moment you will never forget!

Although the first enclosure is almost 1000 years old (built in 1155), most of the ramparts you can see nowadays are from the 18th century. They were erected by the architect Garangeau, famous for having worked for Vauban.

The ramparts form a loop of approximately two kilometers. This high wall borders the city of Saint Malo. You can access the ramparts from several stairs between each entrance.

Unforgettable memories in Saint-Malo

Walking the whole loop of the ramparts of Saint-Malo takes about an hour. You will find exits all through out.
We recommend starting this walk from the Porte de Saint-Thomas, which is just behind Place Chateaubriand. This access point offers an amazing view: to its right, one can find the long beach of the Sillon, the Fort National in front of it and the islet of Grand Bé to its left. A great opportunity to take pictures!
Don’t forget to pack a warm sweater, as the narrow streets of the old town can sometimes be very cool.

The Fort National is undoubtedly an emblematic place of the walled city. Definitely a must see attraction in Saint-Malo. It is far from being just a military purposed architecture. This magnificent structure has been linked to various historical events over the past three centuries.

Vauban and Garangeau designed the architecture in 1689. This historic building is located on an islet of Saint-Malo. Its primary purpose was to defend the islet. The beach below the Fort is mentioned in the famous ‘Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe’ of Châteaubriand, which tells how he almost died drowned falling off the ship along with some of his comrades.

On August 13, 1944, as the war stormed, the Fort National hosted more than a hundred people, who were seeking shelter from the enemy bombardments.

Classified as a historical monument since 1913, it is is accessible at low tide, and offers a remarkable panorama!

A spectacular military site

Today, the Fort National is mostly known for offering an exceptional setting. It is regularly reserved for film and photo shoots. We recommend guided visits to make the most out of your Fort National experience. A great opportunity to learn a fascinating history lesson, with lots of exciting anecdotes!
