You may not know him, but Robert Surcouf is one of the most famous French privateers of his time from Saint-Malo.
From 1794 to 1810, Surcouf tracked down countless merchant ships. He first sailed when he was only 13 years old and quickly took the lead of a slave ship, which transported Africans to Mauritius.

When the slave trade was banned in 1795, he decided to become a privateer. He then began to chase the British merchant and military marines on European seas and on the Indian Ocean. He was then nicknamed the «Sea Tiger». Surcouf was nominated as a member of the Légion d’Honneur in 1804 and became one of the richest shipowners in Saint-Malo!
